FAQs
How long do prosthetics last
Silicone prosthetics usually last between two to three years, but can often last longer.
The lifespan of your prosthetic is dependent on use, anatomical location, and care.
We recommend the prosthetic be remade every 2-4 years to update the color and assess if there have been any tissue changes which might affect the fit.
Our prosthetics have a one year warranty. There is a fee if any repairs are needed after this time.
Maintenance and Care
Remember that your prosthetic has thin silicone edges and treat it with care.
Care:
– Prosthetics need to be removed overnight to allow the underlying skin to be cleaned
and receive air exposure
– Wash with gentle soap and warm water at least once a week
– Use 99% isopropyl alcohol and cotton wipe if deeper clean is needed
– Use provided spray to facilitate putting on prosthetic if needed
Nails:
– Acetone free nail polish remover only
What to avoid:
– Abrasive surfaces which might cut the silicone or wear the color off
– Any oil-based products such as lotions, moisturizers or soaps containing oils
– Any solvents except isopropyl alcohol
– Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the color to fade
– Avoid swimming with your prosthesis as salt water and chlorine can cause the color
to fade
– Smoking will stain and discolor the prosthesis
Post Surgical Wait Times
We recommend waiting 9 months to 1 year after an amputation or major surgery to get a detailed prosthetic. This allows time for swelling to subside and sensitivities to settle.
We offer custom silicone sockets to help reduce oedema swelling after surgery which can be
used once wound healing has occurred.
